Throughout Southern literature, the authors of Southern text use religion to convey emotion through grotesque-life changing events and concepts. An article titled â€Å"Flannery O’Connor’s Rage of Vision†, by Claire Katz discusses how O’Connor’s literature feature religion and Christianity to throughout the literature. The author states, â€Å"Since O’Connor had identified her theme as Christian, it is no surprise to find critics discussing this prototypical pattern in religious terms; the protagonist is humiliated in order to recognize his state of sin, and is thus open to grace and redemption.†(55) Therefore, this essay will examine and explain the abstract Christian components illustrated among multiple texts written by Flannery O’Connor and provide textual evidence to support the abstract findings from within the texts. The first point requiring examination is sin and how the text exhibits the concept of sin and how it effects the literature. The second point the essay will examine is the violence O’Connor uses to expose the main character’s sin in the literature and to change the character’s morals and personality through sadism. Lastly, the essay will examine salvation itself. In addition, how it is present throughout O’Connor’s literature. The Power of Race The story, Desiree’s Baby by Kate Chopin takes places in the late 19th Century in Louisiana, where racial separation and inequality is very prevalent. The white landowners are often in a family whose name equates to high status. The African American’s are slaves to the landowners and are often whipped and beaten during their work. They hold no status and this is solely due to the fact of their race. In Kate Chopin’s Desiree’s Baby, it is evident that race and social identity is equated directly with character status in this time period, as shown through Armand’s changes in behavior when the baby is born, as well as Desiree’s fall of status with her new baby. Desiree was abandoned as a child but gains status when Monsieur Valmonde takes her from the pillar she was found sleeping at and takes her into the family. Chopin says, â€Å"For the girl grew up to be beautiful and gentle, affectionate and sincere— the idol of V almonde† (1). Her family is not the only ones to idolize the beautiful Desiree. Many people believe that it is good luck to be the one who bites into the plastic toy skeleton hidden by the baker in each rounded loaf. Sweets are also included in the feast. These include, cookies, chocolate and sugar skulls. Friends and family members exchange gifts consisting of sugar skeletons or other items with a death related iconography. Often times, a gift is more prized if the skull or skeleton has ones own name written on it with icing. I had no idea what Dia de los Muertos was beforeparticipating in a class project that taught us about the Mexican holiday, which is observed Nov. 2 to honor dead loved ones. About most of the class was very interested in this topic which gave us a more of understanding about what the Hispanic people celebrate; however, this is only one celebration they celebrate but there are more.
